Juergen, a version of Post.Office with SMTP-Auth will be available

Ah! Sounds fabulous! I hope it's not just plain text though...

No. Encrypted.

Oh? I thought the original developer had abandoned the product and you picked it up? What's the story here? Is tenon maintaining the code or is another company. I mean - Tenon doesn't provide development or support for Solaris or NT, do they?

Our partner in Japan, Open Technologies, maintains the code. Tenon ported Post.Office to Mac OS X and we (and OTC) are making extensions and enhancements. Tenon is considering providing support for Solaris. (This would be technical support only; we have no rights or intentions to extend Post.Office on any platform other than Mac OS X.)

trouble. But, as you can also see, we have been very attentive to
these issues and very fast with solutions (perhaps a bit too fast
 :-)).

Perhaps. But see above. It hurts no matter whether it takes long to fix or not. Server down is server down. Or does the PO license allow 2 installations so one can switch back and forth?

You can set up an additional Post.Office system on a second machine with no mail accounts. This second system simply acts as a forwarder for your domains. Since it doesn't have mail accounts, it doesn't need a license. If your real mail server is down the back up forwarder will hold the mail. That way no mail bounces and you don't lose any mail during a temporary outage.

But the bottom line is that a simple Post.Office update shouldn't cause an outage. We are in the process of correcting our update proceedures.
