All,
Pop-before-SMTP should be used for travelling users, and yes, that is a
work-around too, but it seems to work very well for us. SMTP AUTH is a
priority for our next full update. We put pop before SMTP in first because
at the time, SMTP AUTH was not widely supported.
With Pop-before-SMTP and the relay settings described here:

you should not need a buddy and should have no problems with open relay.
