Post.Office
How much space do you have on your local machine? Enough to
temporarily store a copy of the entire mail system files and
directories? You can execute, after a clean shutdown of post.office:
tar cvzf mailsystems.tgz /var/spool/post.office /var/spool/mailbox
/etc/post.office.conf
This will create a gzipped archive of the listed directories where
ever you execute the command. It will also retain permissions and
ownership. Depending on your file system size you may need to TCP
mount a disk from another server. BE CAREFUL, because you do not
want to fill up the file system that is spooling the mail or
everything stops. You can check the disk usage of each of these on
the console with du -sk /var/spool/post.office, etc.
After you have this archive you can burn it to CD / DVD or ftp, scp,
afp to another host.
The only drawback is that this can be slow depending on your mail
volume, and if you have *LOTS* of mail you could exceed the max file
size. Breaking the tarball into each component will help this a
little.
Hope that this helps a little,

To track down a problem on my server, the Tenon folks have advised
me not to run Retrospect on it. I still need to backup, so
naturally, I figure I'd login to Post.Office and visit the help
pages for guidance. This is what I found:
Backup Instructions:
These instructions assume that you have installed Post.Office in the
default locations which are /usr/local/post.office (program
executables), /var/spool/post.office (the spooling directories), and
/var/spool/mailbox (the pop/IMAP mailbox directory). If you selected
other locations you will need to adjust the instructions
accordingly. To determine the current locations of your Post.Office,
Program, and Mailbox directories list the contents of the
/etc/post.office.conf file.
1. Log on as root.
2. Shutdown Post.Office by typing:
/usr/local/post.office/post.office shutdown
3. Back up the following items making sure to maintain
permissions and links:
o /var/spool/post.office (the Post.Office account and
configuration information)
o /var/spool/mailbox (the mailbox information)
o /etc/post.office.conf (your configuration file)
I'm a Mac guy. What does "Back up the following items making sure to
maintain permissions and links" mean exactly? What's wrong with
including the syntax?! Argh.
