Even I own a marvelous Scott eVest (http://www.scottevest.com) not 
always my Titanium is fitted in the back pocket of mt eVest. :-)
Sometimes the only resource I have is an Internet browser in an Internet Cafe.
In those situations, web mail is a must.

In the other hand, relative to security, of course using a public 
service is not the best.
But don't forget to remember most of ADSL (and other) operators are 
using transparent proxies. So a copy of your email will reside in the 
proxy even if you are using your own webmail server.

As a reference, last week I was able to access to my bank account 
balance without using my secret PIN just downloading the last visited 
time, stored in the proxy, and from a different location.
Of course I placed a complaint to my operator (Telefonica) 'cause 
they are proxiing https pages.
They promised me to  solve the problem. But as a matter of fact it 
happened and I don't know how many people could access to my (and 
others) bank listings.
