Upgrade to Panther should preserve your data.  You will need to 
reinstall Post.Office as an upgrade to configure the system to 
activate Post.Office on restart.

Do this at the Terminal:

sudo chmod -R 777 /var/root/.spamassassin

This should help your sa-learn problem for unable to write to 
/var/root/.spamassassin folder.
