sa-learn and SpamAssassin

Subject: sa-learn and SpamAssassin
From: Jim Strickland <jims@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I have an IMAP account set up with a folder for junkmail and a folder for good mail. When I run sa-learn on these folders to train SpamAssassin, I get the following.

[Mail:~] root# sa-learn --spam --dir /var/spool/mailbox/434/spamassassin/junkmail
Failed to create default user preference file /var/root/.spamassassin/user_prefs
Learned from 276 messages.
[Mail:~] root# sa-learn --ham --dir /var/spool/mailbox/434/spamassassin/Goodmail
Failed to create default user preference file /var/root/.spamassassin/user_prefs
Learned from 243 messages.
[Mail:~] root# ls -alt .spamassassin/
total 2760
drwx------ 5 root wheel 170 Nov 24 09:19 .
-rw------- 1 root wheel 90112 Nov 24 09:19 bayes_seen
-rw------- 1 root wheel 1534 Nov 24 09:19 bayes_msgcount
-rw------- 1 root wheel 1318912 Nov 24 09:19 bayes_toks
drwxr-x--- 14 root wheel 476 Nov 18 13:08 ..

The part that concerns me is the first response I get after running the sa-learn command, failing to create default user preference file. Is this a normal response that I should not be too concerned about or is this a sign that despite all appearances, SpamAssassin is not truly learning from the sa-learn command? You also see above the response I get from ls -alt .spamassassin/. I'm not exactly sure what each of the line means. It looks like SpamAssassin is learning, but since the default user pref file is failing to create, am I going to lose all training the next time the email server is rebooted?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
