Re: Dynamic Host - SMTP Message Filter Setup

I don't use IMAP much; all of my users are on POP. However, I
started using IMAP and IMAP errors are mailed to root when a action
can't be performed; I this this is by default. I just check my root
mail account (first time in months) and it had 250 messages on IMAP
errors -- was told by Tenon this is normal, not to sweat it.
Oh, OK. The fact that between the error messages for the missing
spam messages, and the IMAP errors being generated because P.O
couldn't deliver the error messages about the missing spam messages
sufficiently quickly, my server generated over a gigabytes' worth of
these error messages before I shut it down shouldn't worry me.
It was generating a meg of messages a minute when I shut it down,
having seized the machine up with DDoSsing itself. I spent the
evening backing up mail, uninstalling and reinstalling P.O and
recreating user accounts and mailing lists to stop Post.Office from
DDoSsing itself with error messages. I first stopped P.O from
forwarding root mail to my regular account after my regular inbox
received about 83,000 error messages and wouldn't load in any IMAP
client I could find. I didn't count the messages in root's mailbox
after that, just going on overall mailbox size as it grew. All the
errors were "can't find this message to deliver", "can't deliver this
message right now", or "IMAP-Server couldn't complete its task"
errors.
It's working now, without killing itself. Diagnosing the server's
configuration was made more difficult by the fact that it must be
running to examine, which revealed itself to be a design flaw, if the
server is running away like it was. Obviously, these are error
messages that I don't have the option to not generate, should the
occasion arise. I'd prefer to not get them, certainly not nearly so
dramatically.
A few more options in the Error Handling page wouldn't go amiss:
don't email me when an IMAP process can't complete a task, and don't
email me when it can't find a particular message, those would be good
options. How some of you are successfully deleting your /messages
folder of mail is a mystery to me, because it sent my P.O server to
hell for a day.
