I have been reading it via the "more" function. It's junk mail addressed to my domain (s). I can watch the PO logs and see that each time a SMTP filter MATCHes and DISCARDs the file the file is then put into the messages folder where it remains until I manually delete it.

That's amazing. Try viewing some of the mail in the folder (new receipts), see who the mail is addressed to and who it the reply_to -- bet its not your users. If so, re-set your "Error Response Parameters" as the snapshot to get PO to delete it.
