Jason,

As outlined in this thread, the "messages folder" accumulates mail 
delivered to Post.Office, but not yet delivered to the individual 
user's mailboxes.

So, if you are  accumulating a lot of mail in this folder you may be 
a "open relay"; verify your relay and POP before SMTP settings.

Also, set your "Error Response Parameters" to "return messages from 
Unknown Users" and to "Delete Undeliverable Mail"; ie (see below):
