Post.Office
poll: filter message when ClamAV is down
Hi all,
This is a quick poll about what the ClamAV module should do when the
ClamAV scanner is not accessible.
Currently, when the ClamAV scanner is not available for any reason
(because it crashed, too many simultaneous messages etc.) all
messages are being flagged as containing a virus. If you haven't set
up your ClamAV filter to copy messages to a filtered mailbox, then
all messages will be lost. The default Post.Office setup for the
ClamAV filter is to discard all trapped messages.
In my opinion it would be better to let messages get passed the
ClamAV module without filtering when the ClamAV scanner is not
available and let other filters (such as SpamAssassin) do their job.
E.g. the clamav scanner is not available and messages will get passed
on to SpamAssassin or other Header/Body filters which can serve as a
backup for virus filtering. That way, normal mail can still get
through.
So the question is: Should the ClamAV module flag all messages as
viruses when the clamav scanner cannot scan the message like it's now?
1) Yes, all messages should be flagged as viruses when the scanner is
not available.
2) No, messages should NOT be flagged as viruses when the scanner is
not available and instead the messages can get scanned by additional
SMTP filters.
I find this a very important issue because if your clamav scanner
goes down and the module can't connect to it, no messages will be
delivered to the final destination which could provide a lot of
problems when you can't check the filtered virus mailbox every day.
Please cast your vote.
Thanks,
Joe.
