mailbox explosion

At some point this morning my spamchecking mailbox (the one i have SA 
send it's captures to) freaked out and went from just over 1000 
messages to several billion.

I suspected my mail client so I removed that IMAP account, quit, 
relaunched, added the account again; now it says 0 messages in that 
IMAP account and it isn't accumulating new messages from spam assassin 
any longer. It's logging in OK but that's it.

Where should I be looking for the problem? I need to get this back up 
and working, the spam assassin captures need my probing eye on them! I 
will be deleting the account through post.office and readding it but 
i'm curious what could have caused this.
