I'm having an occasional issue with POP mail and a Entourage clients.
The
problem goes like this. Clients have their settings set up to leave
mail on
the server for 10 days, and also delete mail from server after it's
been
deleted from the computer. This let's them make better use of webmail.
I
have some users, that I know of, who have connected and received all
the
mail they deleted over the past month again doubled or in some cases
quadrupled. What is going wrong? Ideas?
Something ( on the client I would guess ) that keeps track of which
msgs. have already been downloaded has become corrupt.
The main way to fix this is to have the user set that option to zero
days ( and/or uncheck it ), then do a "Download All" or "Remove Now".
This will download all the available msgs. one last time and reset the
pointers ( or whatever ) for downloaded msgs.
This is a common problem ( as least as far as I've noticed, esp. w/
Windows users ), when using the "save for x days" option, and one of
the main reasons why we strongly discourage it's usage on our servers.
Also, a lot of msgs. for each user adds to network and server loads,
and with the amount and size of msgs. and spam people get these days,
we're not in the mood to become a storage facility for 10's of mB of
files per user. We had one client w/ over 1000 msgs. stored and they
were checking their mail every minute. Needless to say, the server was
spending a good portion if it's time just going through their msgs.
trying to find out which ones were new.
