Hi webMasters,

We've just "won" a group of customers who are using frontpage2000 - and have
difficulties to publish on our server (filenames too long...).

Furthermore they want me to install the Frontpage Server Extensions on our

It's my 1. time I get "confronted" with these MS product. Any chance for
help?

Uwe, I think the issues on WebTen are more than simply long filenames, but rather that the FrontPage Extensions are not supported on WebTen. We worked very hard to get Microsoft to make their FrontPage Server Extensions available for the WebTen environment. It would have simply been a recompile for them, since they have UNIX/Apache sources. They did not see the Mac server market as something big enough for them to care about. So, unfortunately, even though there are no technical issues, the FrontPage Server Extensions are not available for WebTen.

Now with Mac OS X Server here, Microsoft may be more inclined to offer FrontPage Extensions for that platform. This is no longer a Tenon issue, but would be something for others, including Apple, to pursue.

If they compile and run on BSD unix, how hard can it be to "port" them to MachTen / WebTen?

Not hard at all. That's why it wasn't a technical issue, but rather a business one. The sources are proprietary. A year or so ago the sources to the FrontPage Apache module were posted for review after a security fix. We were able to easily recompile the FrontPage Apache module. However there were a number of ancillary modules that were needed to complete the solution. The sources to the following ancillary modules were not available:

shtml.exe
fpcount.exe
author.exe
admin.exe
fpadmcgi.exe
fpsrvadm.exe

It was impossible to get Microsoft to agree to recompile these or to make the sources available so Tenon could recompile them.

Believe me, we worked very hard to make this happen.

Now, with OS X Server available, I don't think we could make a good case for this port anymore, but certainly it would be excellent to have this available on Mac OS X Server.
