Re: 50% of the speed of the Cobalt Raq3 box:-(

Mr. Bennett,
I run this pearl script on two servers, one a 300 mhz G3 Mac (140
Meg'ish Ram) and the other a Cobalt Raq3 (150 mhz with 16 meg RAM!),
the Cobalt server was the first to have the script installed on it
and golly, it runs real fast and with database (s) of over 3000-5000
records (OK tiny to most of you!) it runs really quite well. This
prompted me to run the script on the Mac + WebTen, with the view to
replacing the filemaker side of the box......oh dear, it runs fine
but is about 50% of the speed of the Raq3 box.
Q. Can I make a pearl script go faster?
If just use the WebTen box for this ONLY (ie this would be the ONLY
function of the Box) how can I set it to go as fast as it can when
running the script, to hell with any other function...can I play with
nice values or some such ?
Try FastCGI - it runs the script continually in the background,
eliminating compilation time. (Read the appropriate section in the WT
manual.
This is exactly right. If your CGI script can take advantage of
FastCGI, you will see a significant performance improvement.
In general, for heavy Perl usage, Mac OS X Server with iTools will
give better performance than WebTen.
