Can I place .shtml files on the server?

yes (if you let him)

After someone's answered, perhaps they could also tell me what .shtml files actually are?

html file that include SSI commands.

Hi again, Thanks for your reply. Do I need to do anything special to allow uploading of .shtml files

No, if you allow uploads by that person, they're just regular html files with two differences, they have a different suffix and they contain SSI commands.

or are they simply detected when called from a
browser?

SSI stands for server side includes, so what's special about these files is that the server knows (based on the suffix) that it has to process these files *before* sending 'em to the browser. The server is doing the include file, or the echo of date or time or whatever SSI commands have been included.

With regular html files (and most other files served), the server doesn't change the file in any way, what gets sent to the browser is exactly the same as the file that exists on the server. With SSI, or other dynamic web pages, the server is parsing the file and only sends the output from the commands.

So, your ".shtml" file might include a line with a command to show the date last modified for the file. What's in the file on your server includes a line of text that's an SSI command, what gets sent to the browser does not include that line, it includes only the output substituted for the command line - the date the file was modified.
