Hi Doug,
        It sounds as though there may be some corruption in the Finder
preferences. Try trashing them, rebuilding the desktop, zapping the PRAM &
then starting without extensions on. Once the machine is up & running, run
Fast File First Aid over the WebTen storage file twice. then quit FFFA &
run Disk First Aid over the Hard Drive without anything else running.
Restart & hopefully all will be well.
        I've come across a few instances of Finder preference corruption
crashing some applications with type 2 errors. You might also like to try
the Keep It Up application, which I think you can set to completely restart
the system if an Application quits unexpectedly. I know it will certainly
start the app alone again if it quits, but I think a complete restart is an
option.
        Additionally, if you have access to another machine of the same
type, try swapping the RAM over - that's often a good possibility. If the
power supply (Mains) to your machine is a little flaky, it may have
corrupted something on your drive as well.
