Re: setting up Web server
nwlink.com is the domain name server/Domain Suffix of my ISP, the
upstream. So it is what I have entered into the TCP/IP control panel
for search domain (nwlink.com is NOT the domain I am serving).
OK, sorry about that - I was confused there. So, that would be correct.
The IP number and primary and secondary DNS IP addresses, as
provided by my ISP, are also entered into the TCP/IP control panel.
So far so good.
It would seem to me that I should put in host: www, domain: kuwago.com.
Yes - that is correct, Plus the IP number for your ISP's DNS server,
209.20.130.34.
However, if I put in anything other than nwlink.com (for the
domain in the WebTen preferences) WebTen will change it back to
nwlink.com
Hmm, that sounds like you have DNS turned on in WebTen, and it's
misconfigured. Do you have WebTen set to start up at launch, with DNS
enabled?
, even though the other domain is registered.
Do you have the DNS box checked in the WebTen prefs? Be sure it's unchecked.
I am talking about the Preferences of WebTen (under File) in the
menu, as shown on page 38 of the manual.
Ah OK. (I completely misunderstood and thought you had a domain
already running on this server and this was a second domain you
wanted to add, in which case you would have that filled in already).
What do I place in WebTen preferences for the host and domain name?
Host name = www
domain name = kuwago.com
DNS IP = 209.20.130.34
DNS box unchecked.
Not where, WHAT
host name = ? www ?
Domain name = ? kuwago.com ?
Correct.
I suppose after I get this set up then I can enter other names into
the virtual hosts table using the WebTen admin.
Sure. As long as they have DNS entries at your ISP, you can add as
many as you want.
Do I need to be running the WebTen DNS service on my end?
No.
So DNS on my end is not necessary for virtual hosting with a single IP number?
DNS on your end is not needed whether you have one or multiple IP
numbers or dozens of hosts on one IP number - *unless* you want to
run it for some reason. It is optional, but if if enabled, it must be
configured correctly or you will run into difficulties.
So far though, since what you seem to be saying, is that you have
only one domain at all at this point, that isn't really virtual
hosting (I think that's what confused me, I thought you were adding
"kuwago.com" to a machine already hosting "nwlink.com" or some other
domain).
Am I correct that the only domain you currently want to host is "kuwago.com"?
I only have one IP number available and do not want to pay an extra
$25 per month for another.
You don't need a second IP number to run Tenon's stack, it replaces
OT, but if you don't need it for performance, you may find that some
apps require OT and can't run with Tenon's stack. If WebTen is the
only thing running on the machine, then Tenon's stack would be
recommended, but it's not required.
