Re: Virtual Host Doesn't Like An Entry
Just curious, Stephanie. Is there a way around this?
Hello All,
Last night I attempted to enter a new Virtual Host but all I could get
was an error telling me there was no DNS information. Taking it all in
stride I double checked my information with the DNS servers and the even
double checked with the NSI Registry and everything was in place
correctly. But I still could not add the domain to the Virtual Host. I
then deleted the DNS entries, restarted both servers, entered the DNS
info a second time copying and pasting the name to make sure there were
no spelling problems, but the Virtual Host still rejects the domain. It
is a long name 35 characters including the www. and .com, so maybe that
has something to do with the problem. Any suggestions?
You hit it right on the mark.
There is a defined limit of 63 characters (plus four for .com or
.net or whatever) in DNS (as defined by the RFC1035).
As it happens, Netscape can't deal with domain names that long so
they don't work very well in the real world.
In WebTen, the files for DNS are stored, with a name of
"db.your-domain-name.com", for example, and that is subject to the
Mac OS filenames limit of 32 characters.
