With multiple IP numbers and domains, there's not an easy way to do it. Multiple hosts per IP number? If so, that will make it *really* difficult. If there is one to one host/IP number, you could do redirection probably.

If you can do it, the easiest thing would be to have two machines, one with old, the other with new IPs. You only need that setup for about a week to give DNS time to propagate.

Most web hits will go to the new IP within a few hours, except for folks coming from AOL and other ISPs that cache everything and ignore DNS TTL values. Mail servers often do their own DNS caching, and they take longer to make the transition (it took a full week for 100% of mail to go to the new IP number the last time I moved a domain).

Since the web traffic to the old IPs will drop dramatically, and quickly, you don't even need the "old" machine to be anything new and speedy.

Be sure to drop your DNS TTL value to a low value a week or so ahead of time. Some DNS servers ignore that, but at least the ones that pay attention, will update their records in a timely fashion. -- Stephanie J. Wright
