HTML question

Hi again,
        A quick question on HTML if I may. I've set up a CGI to handle form
input under WebTen. In creating an HTML form, I came across a query that
extensive searching on the Web, IRC questions & no books I have can answer.
        When creating a text field (i.e. plain text box), there is an HTML
attribute called Maxlength which will limit the number of characters that a
user can input into the box.
        My question is: is it possible to limit the number of characters
with a TEXTAREA (i.e. multi-line text box)? If so, what are the attributes
I need to add. I really want an HTML solution rather than having to limit
it within a CGI as I don't know how to write such a script.
        By the way, if anyone has been trying to email me, my Mac had a
major crash & took my hard drive with it (thank goodness for Norton
Utilities!) I was using Ircle 3.0 beta at the time & it quit unexpectedly.
While saving my work, the machine clagged out & I've been some days
recovering it all.
