Why, after my DNS server returns the CNAME record, do I not then see a query
(at the name server) for the host name to which the original host is CNAMEd? I
don't see the second query.

Since the machine queried for the lookup is authoritative for that host, it
doesn't seem likely that the lookup (the first -part, the CNAME) is failing.
I've heard no explanation for why WT does not then do a subsequent lookup for
the A record.

Of course not. But WT doesn't know if recursion is necessary or not for the
query it made. It therefore shouldn't conclude, in less time than it would take
for a recursive lookup, that the lookup failed.

Agreed. Funny thing is though, when I went to my web browser and entered the
VHost name (before it was successfully added) I hit my WebTen server just fine,
and I was fed the default site, as I should have been. So, the browser's lookup
resolved to the correct IP address.
In fact, I Timbuktu'd to the WT machine and opened a web browser there and
entered the VHost I was trying to add. It too hit the WT server. So, a browser
on the same machine as WebTen can find the IP address, but WT itself cannot.

Well, I was using a non-authoritative DNS server for WT until I tried adding a
VHost and had this problem. I I changed the DNS server configured in WT to be
my own, authoritative server. Restarted WT and got the same failed result --
but only when it was WT doing the lookup.

The next time I try to add a VHost and have this problem, I'll try this.
Still unanswered:
1) Why don't I see a second lookup at the DNS server when the lookup of the
VHost being added returns a CNAME?
2) Why does WT do a lookup on other configured VHosts when I am doing an add of
a new VHost?
