AppleScript in the Startup Items folder. It starts the apps in the sequence I 
want with delays between apps.

The downside: KIU uses a one-size-fits-all delay between applications. You 
cannot use a different delay between different pairs of apps. I do use KIU on 
two machines where a fixed delay is satisfactory. AppleScript elsewhere.
