Some comments:
Mac OS provides HFS and HFS+ filesystems. Mac OS X allows the user to choose
between HFS+ and UFS filesystems. The UFS filesystem is a true Unix
filesystem that provides additional features such as fragmentation
resistance, long filenames (up to 255 characters), increased performance,
and increased robustness.
- HFS+ also supports unicode filenames (also under Carbon 1.0.2, MacOS
9).... You can prove this by executing:
myprompt% touch mylovelytestfilewithmorethan31characters
- On an HFS+ volume in the terminal. HFS+ is also arguably as
fragmentation resistant as UFS.
- The performance of UFS is noticeable *slower* than HFS+. This has been
reported many times.
- I can see no reason to use UFS, it is currently a second class citizen
and Apple does not seem to be putting a lot of effort into it. Your
statements were accurate with MacOSX Server 1.0, but not anymore.
My $0.02,
