I have also noticed this behavior but have narrowed it down to only
workstations that are on the network segment that is running DHCP and NAT
behind my router. My static IP addressed workstations on another network
segment do not have this lag--without looking any further I figured it was
some kind of delay on with sendmail and the authenticated relay domain
list...i.e. the workstation-to-server conversation going something like 'I
want to send a mail' 'who are you?' 'I'm this address on this domain' 'let
me check that out' <pause pause pause as the address is resolved via DNS>
'yeah okay'

Otherwise, dunno...I'm anything BUT a sendmail guru. I just know that all
workstations not behind my NAT are sending mail quite quickly.
