Sendmail Slow Response

I have been experiencing an often annoying delay when using our our server
for outgoing mail.  Its takes 30 seconds to a minute for the client to log
into the server before mail is sent.  I've tried using both domains and IP
address in the relay, both yield the same response time.  Any ideas what
might be causing this?
