DNS CNAME

Excuse my ignorance as I am new to this, but how do I add a CNAME to a zone?
I have been instructed to add the following to a DNS zone file:

 smtp  IN  CNAME  smtp.domain.com

I didn't find any info on CNAMES in the manual
