I had sendmail problems too.  I found this on the apple discussions board.
They get it from sendmail.org:

SNIP Sendmail often gets blamed for many problems that are actually the
result of other problems, such as overly permissive modes on directories.
For this reason, sendmail checks the modes on system directories and files
to determine if they can be trusted. For sendmail to run without
complaining, you MUST execute the following command:

chmod go-w /
chmod go-w /etc
chmod go-w /etc/mail
chmod go-w /usr
chmod go-w /var
chmod go-w /var/spool
chmod go-w /var/spool/mqueue

chown root /
chown root /etc
chown root /etc/mail
chown root /usr
chown root /var
chown root /var/spool
chown root /var/spool/mqueue

You will probably have to tweak this for your environment (for example, some
systems put the spool directory into /usr/spool instead of /var/spool and
use /etc/mail for aliases file instead of /etc).

Hope this helps you as it did me. Maybe Apple will fix this in a future
release. 

Do this too: 

root# cd /private/etc
/private/etc] root# chmod g-w . (make sure you put that space and period in
there)
root# /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q1h

Try that.  See what happens.
