A couple of points and questions:

1. There is a huge list of ports at:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

It is a very complete list (much more complete than the one in /etc/services )
There is some more about how it works here http://rute.sourceforge.net/node29.html if anyone wishes to look. :-)

2. I presume you only need to open the ports (e.g. port 80, 25) on the TCP side of things, NOT the UDP side of things to open up access for a web server? I am about 99% sure that is correct, but figured I would ask given the discussion.

3. On a standard OSX install, port 111 sunrpc is open. I understand what sunrpc is, but I am curious as to why this is open by default. Anyone know?

In fact, the ports open by default (at least on one machine) were:
111 sunrpc
427 SLP (server location protocal)
548 AFP over TCP
760 krbupdate, kreg
763 cycleserv 763/tcp

So, I am curious why they left ports 111, 427 and 763 open. Any ideas? Can one close them safely?
Also I know what krbupdate, kreg is, but where is that controlled under OS X?

Thanks!

Chris
