OT: OS X "make" question

I'm trying to install Netpbm on my system. When I attempt to run:

# make
# make install

I get "make: Command not found.".  All the docs I can find online suggest
that make should be installed on OS X.  'find / -name make' returns nothing.
Any ideas?
