Upgrading to iTools 6.1 - help needed

I just tried upgrading my iTools 6.0 installation to 6.1 using the
updater. The Tenon iTools FAQ states it is just a question of running
the 6.1 installer on top of 6.0, without any extra steps:

However, when I followed these instructions and ran the iTools.pkg
installer, iTools refuses to start after installation. Squid terminates
abnormally, and none of the virtual domains answers properly. The admin
server doesn't respond either.

Then I checked "Updating-iTools.rtf" in the Release_Notes folder. It
contains contradictory information, instructing me to run the
"installer.sh" script. When I tried to do so, I was told I needed to be root.
Logging in as root and attempting to run the installer.sh script again
results in messages like "Don't delete me!" and messages stating that
running the script will remove scripts necessary to run the script.

Rerunning the iTools updater doesn't change the situation.

Installing the 10.0.4 update doesn't help either, neither trying to run
the iTools updater after that point (something I think is less than
ideal and requires manual tweaking of files, but at this point I was
desperate to try anything, even if it required additional steps in order
get some sort of response from the server).

Does anybody on this list how I should proceed? Tenon's instructions are
really no help at all, and I can't find any help on their site.
