Hi again,
        Well, no problem there - I agree 500% with you - I found MUCH less
grief with OSX 10.1.5 than using the server edition - unfortunately for me,
the owner of the machine insists on running server for whatever reason.
        In any case, the reason for the slow network problem seems to have
become apparent - I shut it down to eat last night, then came back & reboot
- it go halfway through the startup, then ZOT! it just died - looks like
the power supply has given out. The owner has swapped the drive into
another machine & rebooted on his own network with the original IP address
& gateway set & the performance has returned - obviously OSX is much
pickier about the IP addresses.
        I can configure it remotely now anyway.
