PM is shutting down

Hi

With almost no exception we get these two lines in the error log 
between restarts of the server:

[Wed Aug 21 15:09:58 2002] [alert] (4)Interrupted system call: 
FastCGI: read() from pipe failed (0)
[Wed Aug 21 15:09:58 2002] [alert] (4)Interrupted system call: 
FastCGI: the PM is shutting down, Apache seems to have disappeared - 
bye

Everything works fine afterwards, except that the browser interface 
to itools_admin is unavailable. We can log in to the first page, but 
then we get "The attempt to load...failed". iTools Manager continues 
to work.

Any suggestions as to what is happening?
