So after setting up the system and enabling root, if I want to do
manipulation of web site content through the Finder I have to log out as an
admin user then log in as root, then do the reverse when done?

While the server is physically secure (ie. I'm sitting next to it) is there
any harm in leaving it looged in as root for extended periods of time?

I can see the contents of the directories, it's just that under the
ownership pop-up menu (in Get Info) there's no "www" user in the list so the
pop-up's current selection is blank. This issue is probably related to...

I'm thinking that very same thing.   : )

Thanks for your help!

(Actually, a new user I just created has none of the problems of the first
one, so I may try deleting the problematic user and going from there, before
setting fire to the existing setup).
