Hi Claude,

You might want to try "sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe" to start it up.  This will create /tmp/mysql.sock.  When you shut it down "/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin shutdown".  Use /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql to access the database.

Eric

Where do you get the MySQL package from?  Each vendor has their own way to package MySQL.  Therefore, it will have different ways to resolve this issues.
However the general suggestion is that, you can check if /tmp/mysql.socket exists or not, use safe_mysqld to startup MySQL.  Use mysqladmin shutdown to shutdown MySQL.
iTools will not work with other vendor's MySQL package on the System Status page.
