[iT6.5]Ownership/permissions nightmare

The basic problem is that clients can't access their own files 
uploaded via ftp... The files seem to go up as 664 root/ftpguest [and 
it varies sometimes]. I've created various groups, and added clients 
to the groups... I found nothing useful in the archives - nothing 
seems to help.

Any suggestions before I loose the client?
