Something weird happened during the update from 7.2 to 7.3

All of a sudden this morning, I'm getting calls from customers that they can
not upload files to their websites. When I go to the server I see this:

drwxrwxr-x   94 www    www  3196 26 Apr 11:39 site1.com
drwxrwxr-x    4 www    www   136  7 Feb 20:36 site2.com

Inside "site1.com" all the files are likewise owned by www:www

I can get the server to allow the user to upload file by doing this:

%cd site1.com
%sudo chown -R site1username *

Questions are:
1. any idea what this happened?
2. what is the correct owner:group settings that I should have for the
virtual host directories? (site1.com)
3. what is the correct owner:group settings that I should have for the files
within the virtual host directory?
