Perhaps I've just been running so few threads on my server that this hasn't
bit me. If it does, I suppose I'll throw a Linux box at the MySQL issue and
continue with MacOS X for the rest of it.

I'd love to know how Sybase (mentioned in the article) handled the problem.
I've been using Sybase on Intel for the last year.

I realize that was said in humor, but a switch to Intel would not make the
problem go away. According to the article, it's the extra layer of the Mach
micro-kernel that is causing the slowdown. That would be the same issue
whether it was Intel, AMD, IBM or Motorola making the chips. Regarding the
Linux box mentioned above, that implies Linux on Intel or IBM/Motorola would
work fine.
