here's an idea...

could itools check that value in the shells file and give a sensible error message in a sensible place?

it is a known issue with a straightforward fix.

how about "FTP access has been changed by Apple system installer. Would you like me to change it back to the standard itools configuration so that FTP will work again?"

it's the little things like this that will make customers flock to tenon like we all have.

c'mon, be a sport, help us out - this issue comes up every six months or so with someone in a panic.

Tenon Support had written:
Proftpd checks what shell a user is assigned, and makes sure it is a valid shell in on the system (exists in the /etc/shells file). The problem is that Apple's OS X installer replaces that file with the default, so installing OS X after installing iTools will make it so that iTools ftp users can no longer login. The noshell executable simply exits so that if an ftp user tries to get in through the shell they will not be able to even though they have a valid shell set. An alternative to adding that shell may be to add the following line to your proftpd.conf file:

RequireValidShell off

Which would disable that check.

Thanks, that fixed the ftp problem. Care to explain what this is about?
