could itools check that value in the shells file and give a sensible 
error message in a sensible place?

it is a known issue with a straightforward fix.

how about "FTP access has been changed by Apple system installer. Would 
you like me to change it back to the standard itools configuration so 
that FTP will work again?"

it's the little things like this that will make customers flock to tenon 
like we all have.

c'mon, be a sport, help us out - this issue comes up every six months or 
so with someone in a panic.
