oops ... hi again ...

i made a little blooper ... the edit to the /etc/hosts file is to ensure that your lan can get to your virtual hosts by url and not ip ... i incorrectly stated that the other way around ... sorry ... your dns record ensures that outside machines can resolve your url to an ip ...

if you have not edited /etc/hosts i am unsure how your lan traffic is able to see your virtual host by url ... perhaps someone else out there can explain that for me as i would be quite interested ...

see yah ben ...

hi ...

if i am thinking correctly you will need to have your router answer to your dynamic dns address and then port forward all the traffic you need ie port 80 for html and any others that you need in to your internal network ...

for example ...

say your dynamic address is 204.205.206.207 ... this is the ip that should be assigned to the router from the perspective of the outside world ... on the inside of your network your routers address is probably something like 192.168.0.1 ... the router then port forwards all required traffic on to your server whose ip is probably something like 192.168.0.2 and blocks all unrequired ports ...

how you get your router to always know what your dynamic ip is i do not know ... hopefully you have that sorted ...

as for your lan being able to address by url ... you will need to add your name server and its non routable ip to /etc/hosts so that boxes outside your lan can resolve to your server ... this is a tab delimited file and tenon should be able to help you here if you need help ...

finally as far as itools is concerned all virtual sites hosted on the same server will be at 192.168.0.2 ...

i hope i explained this ok ... at home i have a static ip but from what i gather aside from this my setup seems quite similar and all seems to work for me ... though i had to suss most of it myself with some help from terry ... :) ...

hope this helps ...

see yah ben ...

Thanks for the reply!

This isn't actually an issue because of the way DynDNS works. I know
for a fact that the DNS server is working fine because
https://www.mydomain.com:85 opens just fine.

Keep in mind that if you want to run a dynamic DNS server, every time your
connection is restarted a new IP for your DNS server will be provided.
Therefore, every time your IP changes it will take anywhere (these are just
estimates) from 3-5 days to populate everywhere.

So the problem is clearly in the iTools setup. Although the manual says host-based configuarations are possible, it appears as this is not an option.

So my question is, how do I create host-based (not IP-based) virtual
host? I know everything at DynDNS is set up correctly, as I was able
to host easily w/ Mac OS Server 10.3. But with iTools, I'm forced to
enter an IP address. What should I enter? It's dynamic! Right now I
have the server's LAN address (192.168.1.100) entered as the IP. The
funny thing is that people on my LAN can access www.mydomain.com just
fine... it's the people on the other side of te router that can't
connect.
