More About iTools 6

Browser-based configuration

iTools is designed to enhance and extend the basic command line text configuration process of Apple's Apache web server with a point-and-click web-browser experience. Using the browser-based administration facility, new web virtual hosts are created with a few mouse clicks. Using this interface, hundreds of virtual hosts may be created and maintained on a single server. In contrast, text-based Apache configuration would require error-prone editing of multiple files with a text editor to create a single virtual host, and modifications to a series of SSL files to support secure key and certificate specification. A mistake in any one of these files would leave an SSL host open to violation from remote or local users.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

SSL is the essential standard tool for eCommerce. Without SSL, secure browser-web server exchange of credit card and other purchase information is not possible. iTools supports version 3.0 of the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol. SSL 3.0 is used to encrypt network transmissions between a browser and the iTools web servers. iTools supports strong (128-bit) and weak (40-bit) encryption algorithms. iTools supports multiple, simultaneous sessions using different CA certificates. iTools is the only recognized Mac OS X Web server for which all CAs will generate certificates. As such, it is the only SSL available for Mac OS X.

Virtual FTP Hosts

FTP virtual hosting is essential for the segregated upload and maintenance of different web content hierarchies. iTools extends the standard Mac OS X FTP server to support virtual, "multihomed" FTP services. The virtual FTP service allows an FTP user to connect to "ftp1.domain.com" and receive an FTP banner message and content tree while another user connects to "ftp2.domain.com" and receives a different FTP banner and content tree. Any number of IP-based virtual hosts can be created using iTools' browser-based configuration. Unique content folders may be created within each FTP virtual host. The browser-based configuration can then give different sets of users and groups restricted access to files and sub-folders within the FTP virtual host hiearachy

Domain Name Service (DNS)

iTools supports a browser-configurable DNS service. WebTen incorporates the latest BIND (8.2) which provides secure reliable DNS operation. The powerful DNS features provided by BIND 8 are only a mouse click away.

Users and Groups

iTools browser-based administation supports the creation of Mac OS X users and groups. Rather than requiring access to a system console as Mac OS X Server does, the iTools browser interface supports the creation of Mac OS X users and groups. The users and groups can then be given restricted access to web content, restricted FTP access to upload content and restricted access web-based mail.

Search Engine

iTools contains a sophisticated web index search capability. Using the iTools browser interface, multiple databased may be created containing indexed references to groups of local and remote URL content. Once a database is indexed, it can be searched by keyword or phrase. Indexing operations can be scheduled on a repetitive basis with email reports generated at the completion of each operation.

WEBmail Service

To support anywhere, anytime e-mail access and to avoid the requirement of email profiles for each mail client user, large number of email users are using a web browser to access their e-mail. WEBmail allows a user to connect to a URL, then by submitting a POP or IMAP username, host addressing and password information, mail is retrieved from the remote host and made available for viewing, response, forwarding, cataloging, and more.

eMail Service

iTools extends Mac OS X server with a fully functional "sendmail-type" email service. In addition to WEBmail, iTools has been extended to support reception of email for local WEBmail users as well as remote POP and IMAP users. Using a unified POP3 and IMAP mailbox, users can contact the iTools server with WEBmail or traditional clients and manage their internet mail. This powerful email service will support email for thousands of users each managed with iTools' point-and-click web browser configuration.

System Requirements

iTools will operate on the Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server 10.x releases.
