XTen 6.1 Notes
Notes for existing XTen users
XTen 6.1 has been released. We recommend that existing users
download XTen 6.1 as it adds many new features and enhancements
over previous versions of XTen. The new version can be downloaded from
our web site at
http://www.tenon.com/products/xten.
Changes and improvements to XTen 6.1 from XTen 6.0.1
- A native Fast File System (FFS) is included to further improve XTen's
performance. This file system is implemented within a single Macintosh HFS or
HFS+ file, so no special attention is necessary.
- NFS client support is included. XTen 6.1 allows you to desktop mount NFS
volumes from remote systems.
- The AfterStep Window Manager is the default. AfterStep provides an GUI
intended to be quite similar to that of NeXTStep. Also included are OpenLook
Window Manager (OLVWM), Motif Window Manager (MWM), and Tom's Window Manager
(TWM).
- XDM Session Control has improved set up and operation.
- Secure Shell Remote Client Launch is supported (SSH client). This new
feature eliminates the sending of password in clear text on the LAN.
- Multiple password based user desktops are supported.
- Hot key xterm launch is supported.
- CDE font environment is now integrated.
- Shared memory extension in the X Server is now supported.
- Lesstif (Motif 1.2 compatible) desktop environment is now included.
Upgrade information
XTen 6.1 is a complete install. This means that it will not "upgrade" an
older version of XTen in the conventional sense. It would not be difficult
to copy information from a previous XTen install into the new XTen 6.1.
Existing customers can upgrade to XTen 6.1 for $99 by contacting
sales@tenon.com, or using our online
ordering page.
The license information can be entered into XTen by the following steps:
- Open a terminal window.
- Type:
su root
- Type
XTen
as the password.
- Type:
chnglicense
- A license dialog box will show up. Enter your license number.
- That's it!
Additional X Clients
New X clients are being ported to XTen on a regular basis. As they become
available, they are posted for anonymous FTP access on
ftp://ftp.tenon.com/pub/applications/PPC/X11.
XIE and PEX
Support for XIE (X Imaging Extension) and PEX (Phigs Extension to X) are
not enabled by default, but can be easily enabled by using a local xterm. To
enable XIE, enter the following commands as the super user (root):
# cd /usr/X11/bin
# rm X
# ln -s XMachTen.XIE X
To enable PEX, enter the following commands as the super user (root):
# cd /usr/X11/bin
# rm X
# ln -s XMachTen.PEX X
When PEX is enabled, support for XIE is also included. The configuration
takes effect after the next restart of XTen.
Known issues
Though XTen 6.1 features vast improvements over previous versions, there
are some issues we have found during the testing of XTen 6.1 that could lead
to future difficulty. These issues are listed below:
- RAM Doubler XTen 6.1 works with RAM Doubler version
1.5.2a or newer. Older versions of RAM Doubler may interfere with proper
XTen operation
- XTen Control Panel One of the new features of the XTen
6.1 full release will be to automatically pick up the MacOS TCP/IP control panel
panel settings on startup. In the pre-release version of XTen, this feature
may not work. You must enter your network settings into the XTen
control panel before you start XTen for the first time. If you fail
to do this, you will be left with an unusable installation. If this happens, you
will need to do a clean re-install. A clean re-install consists of removing
the XTen preferences and configuration files from your system's preferences
folder and removing the XTen folder.
- Various Unix Utilities There are a few Unix utilities
that are included with XTen. Under the current XTen 6.1 pre-release, a few
utilities will not work. These include the Unix commands "uptime", "who",
"last", and "w". Others might be affected also.
- System "adduser" command XTen 6.1 provides the capability
to be a "multi-user" Unix system. If the "adduser" command is given on the
command line with no arguments, it will remove the entire home directory without
prompting. The proper syntax for the "adduser" command (which will not
remove the home directory) is: "adduser <username>"
where <username> is the name
of the user you want to add. For example, if you wanted to add a user called
"tenon", you would type: "adduser tenon".
- License system If a user lets his temporary license expire, he
is not given an opportunity to enter it. Therefore, if an XTen license expires,
the XTen installation from that point onward is unusable and a reinstall is required.
If the license information is entered in timely fashion, this difficulty will not occur.
